Weekend Race Results

Mechanicsburg, PA – Stevie Smith tuned up for this week’s World of Outlaws invasion with a victory in the 25-lap sprint car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway, his first in nearly nine years. Gary Stuhler won the 25-lap late model feature.

Smith started sixth in a strong 24-car field and was up to third behind Jim Siegel and Brian Leppo on lap two. Brian Montieth dropped Smith to fourth on lap eight. Smith took the spot back from Montieth four tours later and took second from Leppo on lap 14.

The ex-Outlaw used an inside move through the first corner to take the lead from Siegel on lap 17, but he was hardly home free. Both Leppo and Brian Montieth, who were running second and third respectively, retired under caution with two laps remaining and that gave new life to Fred Rahmer.

The defending Cindy Rowe Auto Glass champion started ninth and was seeking his first win of the season as he charged past Lucas Wolfe and Jeff Shepard, then set his sites on Smith.

Rahmer’s charge through the fourth turn on the last lap fell a car length short and Smith became theGrove’s 7th different winner of 2007. It was his 20th career victory, but first since May 29, 1998.

Rahmer’s runnerup effort was his best of the season. Shepard finished third after starting 12th. Greg Hodnett came from 23rd to fourth. Wolfe completed the top five ahead of T. J. Stutts, Mark Smith, Don Kreitz, Jr., Todd Shaffer and Josh Wells.

Heats for the 34 sprint cars in competition were won by Siegel, Wolfe, Kreitz and Doug Esh. Shaffer and Steve Buckwalter won the consolation races.
