LEPPO, RAHMER AND ESH SCORE IN TRIPLE 20s
Written by Jason Bly
Brian Leppo took top honors in Friday night's Jack Gunn Memorial Triple 20s for sprint cars at Williams Grove Speedway with FredRahmer and Doug Esh also posting victories in the event sponsored by The Law Firm of Colgan Marzzacco.
Rahmer started on the pole in the first feature and led every lap en route to a record 77th career victory at Williams Grove.
He earned 2500 for his performance and became the first driver to win three features in sprint car competition at the Grove this season.
Todd Shaffer, who started fourth, drove by Alan Krimes with two laps remaining, but was unable to close on Rahmer.
Krimes settled for third. Cody Darrah charged from the 12th starting position to finish fourth and Doug Esh completed the top five.
Greg Hodnett, Sean Michael, Brian Leppo, Brian Montieth and Craig Keel finished in positions six through ten respectively.
Esh started fourth in the second feature and took the lead from Leppo with an outside move off turn four on lap two. Once in front he stayed glued to the outside cushion and put a full straightaway between himself and Leppo at the finish.
Esh's third victory of the season tied Rahmer for the lead in that department. It was the 16th of his career and was worth $2500.
Hodnett was third followed by Shaffer and Rahmer.
Stevie Smith, Mark Smith, Darrah, Krimes and Don Kreitz, Jr. completed the top ten.
The third feature was the best of the night with positions in the top five changing constantly.
Hodnett took the early lead at the start with Krimes and Leppo swapping the runnerup spot back and fourth until Leppo claimed it on lap 14. He drove around Hodnett three laps later and went on to claim the $5000 victory.
Leppo joined Rahmer and Esh with three Grove wins in 2008.
Hodnett, Krimes, Rahmer and M. Smith completed the top five ahead of Shaffer, Montieth, Darrah, S. Smith and Keith Kauffman.
Leppo earned $6850 for his night?s work, Rahmer $4300, Hodnett $4100, Esh $3425 and Shaffer $3100.
Friday night?s program was named to honor the memory of Jack Gunn, the late Hall of Fame promoter of Williams Grove Speedway.
Todd Shaffer set fast time in qualifications with a lap of 16.921
Heats for the 29 sprint cars in competition were won by Hodnett and S. Smith.
